Google Photos will no longer have unlimited storage after June 1st, 2021

Google has announced that it will no longer allow unlimited uploads of newly added images to its Google Photos service after June 1st, 2021. Google Photos Vice President Shimrit Ben-Yair detailed the upcoming change, sharing some statistics that influenced it. With 4 trillion photos stored in total and a weekly upload rate of 28 billion combined photos and videos, discontinuing the unlimited high quality photo policy is Google's way to maintain service for future users while also maintaining cost sensibility. Importantly, any existing high quality image and video uploads to Google Photos will not count towards a Google Account's 15 gigabytes of free storage or any Google One paid storage plans. Another major exception includes any photos and videos uploaded in high quality from Google's Pixel 1 to 5 phones. All existing high quality photos uploaded to the service before the June 1st end date will not count towards the Google Account storage limit. No changes are being ...

macOS 11 Big Sur launches November 12th alongside new Apple Silicon Macs

Today, Apple hosted its third presentation in the past two months, with this one focusing on Mac hardware and software. The major announcement was that future Mac computers will be powered by Apple Silicon, chips designed by Apple instead of Intel. In addition to more security and a smaller profile, Apple Silicon for Mac will be entirely built into one system on a chip design as opposed to discrete CPUs and GPUs. The first Apple Silicon for Mac is called the M1 Chip, with major increases in power efficiency, computational speed, and machine learning capability. The first Mac computers with M1 are the MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro alongside the Mac mini desktop. In order to ensure a smooth transition from Intel-powered computers to Apple M1-powered ones, Apple will release Rosetta 2 in order to ensure apps not designed natively for Apple Silicon to run on Intel Mac models and vice versa. Apple claims that some Intel apps running on M1-powered computers via Rosetta 2 perform bett...

Spotify launching program to boost artist visibility in exchange for lower royalties

Spotify has announced an experimental feature that will allow creators and publishers to choose music they want to promote more in exchange for less revenue from plays of chosen songs. Spotify published an announcement of this feature alongside an explanation of how Spotify's personalized recommendations for its users works. The factors that influence the algorithm that powers these playlists includes time of day music is listened to, how it's interacted with (either passively or liked and shared), genre, and elements such as tempo. These are just some of the thousands of unique factors incorporated into the algorithm. This experimental program will give an artist or label's selection for promotion to the algorithm that generates personalized music playlists for the service's millions of users. According to Spotify, the reason that this will result in a reduced royalty payout instead of an upfront cost is "to ensure the tool is accessible to artists at any stage...

Self-deleting messages coming soon to WhatsApp, features some caveats

Self-destructing messages are coming to WhatsApp soon, but when they arrive you'll find they're not as flexible as you might have hoped. WABetaInfo has detailed how the upcoming feature, referred to within WhatsApp as "Disappearing Messages," is set to function. It can be enabled or disabled per each individual chat conversation you find yourself in. Though the feature, originally referred to as "Expiring Messages," once was set to allow users to set custom availability intervals, the development team has decided to set the message visibility period to 7 days with no ability to customize it. According to the official WhatsApp FAQ article devoted to the feature, the following points are important to note: • If a user doesn’t open WhatsApp in the seven day period, the message will disappear. However, preview of the message might still be displayed in notifications until WhatsApp is opened. • When you reply to a message, the initial message is quoted. If ...

Netflix raised the price of its standard and premium plans in the US to $14 and $18 monthly

Streaming giant Netflix today has raised the prices of its membership plans in the United States. Its standard plan, formerly $13 a month, now costs $14, and its premium plan, formerly $16, is now $18. This is the first subscription price increase Netflix has had in the United States since January of 2019. In that time, price increases have happened in other countries such as Canada . The global COVID-19 pandemic leading people to spend more time in their homes likely played a factor of weighing potential user atrophy in response to the price increase versus most just accepting it. According to statement by a Netflix spokesperson, the US subscription price increase "does not influence or indicate a global price change.” The price change is being driven by increased content production in the face of additional competition compared to a couple years ago, as new streaming alternatives such as Disney+ and HBO Max have been introduced. Netflix's new plan pricing is now in effe...

XDA announced a smartphone that runs LineageOS and supports Ubuntu Touch

Popular Android development community XDA-Developers has announced that it is partnering with F(x)tec in order to release its first smartphone. The phone can run both LineageOS and Ubuntu Touch . The phone's announcement comes via a news post by XDA's Chief Content Officer Nirave Gondhia. It is primarily being touted as a smartphone that runs a viable alternative to Android in either LineageOS or Ubuntu. The driving factor behind the decision to develop and release a phone that runs LineageOS out of the box is in order to provide enthusiast smart device users with a more accessible and less headache-inducing way to customize and run the software they want to run. XDA's Pro1-X smartphone is based off of the previously released F(x)tec Pro1 , which means that it also includes a sliding keyboard and tabletop friendly configuration. In addition to increased RAM, storage, and color options when compared to the F(x)tec Pro1, the Pro1-X takes advantage of LineageOS 16's P...

Open source YouTube video downloader taken down from GitHub by RIAA

The youtube-dl GitHub repository has been taken following a Digital Millennium Copyright Act takedown notice from the Recording Industry Association of America. The takedown request was posted on GitHub, citing concerns that youtube-dl is focused on circumventing YouTube 's copyright protection of its vast licensed audiovisual library. In particular, the request cites that the source code references 3 RIAA-protected songs from the likes of Justin Timberlake and Taylor Swift. The community response has been one of defending youtube-dl as software that does not aim to circumvent any copyright protection. Journalist Parker Higgins posted on Twitter about how useful youtube-dl is for archivists and other preservation activists through its format shifting ability. This is a fair use action. Higgins also calls the RIAA's actions "aggressive and out there," with the RIAA's claims of copyright infringement being purely hypothetical. Despite community outcry and pro...

Playlisty emerges as alternative to SongShift's Spotify playlist export feature

For people that subscribe to multiple music streaming services like Apple Music and Spotify, interoperability and playlist curation has been a constant challenge. Though apps like SongShift have allowed for cross-service playlist building and sharing, compatible streaming services have been looking to curb that functionality. The ability to synchronize playlists across services including Apple Music , Pandora , Tidal , Spotify , and YouTube Music is useful for both individual users and curators looking to cultivate music playlists while accounting for platform exclusivity. Unfortunately, these streaming services have been looking to curb this functionality by denying playlist management apps like SongShift access to their APIs. As SongShift describes in a blog post , Spotify is blocking their access to the service's API, and will therefore no longer be compatible for playlist exporting as of its version 5.1.2 release. The SongShift development team gave the following statement:...

Facebook Messenger redesign launches with cross-app communication with Instagram

Facebook today launched a redesign of its popular Messenger app and service, bringing along with it new features and support for messaging Instagram app users. In a post on the official Messenger blog, Facebook's Messenger Vice President Stan Chudnovsky shared statistics as well as the recently implemented features that have built up to today's redesign. Of the 1 billion registered Facebook Messenger users, 10 million of them customize their chats. The redesign implements new themes and reactions, alongside a new logo and default theme. As far as upcoming features are concerned, selfie stickers and a timed message deleting "vanish mode" will be "coming soon," joining already available recent features like the Zoom Messenger Rooms and Watch Together simultaneous content viewer. The major feature launch, however, is cross-app communication with Instagram. This support extends beyond just messaging, and includes the ability for Messenger and Instagram u...

Privacy Badger's default settings now have local learning off to prevent fingerprinting

Popular privacy extension Privacy Badger will be changing its default settings in order to better protect user privacy and prevent tracking. In a post on the Electronic Frontier Foundation's website, 4 members of the Privacy Badger team described what's changing and why. The Google Security Team reached out to the EFF's Privacy Badger developers back in February 2020 in order to inform them of how its "local learning" function can be used as a method of fingerprinting-based tracking by malicious actors. With the local learning feature enabled, Privacy Badger dynamically adjusts how it operates based on the behavior of the sites a user visits. This was compared to the now-patched exploit in Safari 's Intelligent Tracking Prevention function. Luckily, this disclosed flaw from the Google Security Team has not been used by or against anyone outside of the proof-of-concept discovery and showcase to the development team. The local learning feature has been disab...

Google is introducing redesigned critical alerts for fraudulent access to your account

Google has announced that it will implement newly designed security alerts for any suspicious behavior or suspected hacking on Google Accounts. The blog post announcing these new alerts details how they'll work by integrating into every single Google app you use. At any point when Google detects suspicious activity, it will automatically displayed so users don't need to access their email or phone notifications in order to see what potentially malicious activity is occurring. This redesigned security notification builds upon Google's 2015 implementation of security alerts that displayed as Android notifications. This caused a 20-times increase in the amount of users that saw and interacted with security alerts versus their previously email-only iteration. The new security features will start rolling out "in the coming weeks," though a wider mainstream rollout to significant numbers of Google Accounts won't come until "earlier next year." Furthe...

FreeTube version 0.8 beta showcases from-scratch rewrite and brand new design

The privacy focused and open source YouTube app FreeTube has been rewritten from scratch to provide a new and enhanced experience, including a built-in extractor API to serve videos. In a blog post announcing the release of version 0.8.0's beta, the FreeTube development team detailed a new code base that's been designed with long term maintainability and updates in mind. Alongside the completely rebuilt back end, the user interface has also been completely rewritten to be more in line with YouTube 's modern layout. The application programming interface that FreeTube has used, Invidious , will no longer be necessary, as it now features a built-in API. This means that FreeTube instances will no longer need an Invidious server in order to run. If you still want to use Invidious, however, you can change your API preference using FreeTube's settings page, which also includes a fallback option in order to ensure continuous functionality when either API fails. Other featu...
